Welcome to the Website of the Qld Heron Sailing Association.

This website has been created to provide information for existing and aspiring Heron sailors in Queensland, Australia.

Herons are a sailing dinghy of 3.5m (11'3'') for a crew of two designed by Jack Holt, designer of the Mirror, GP14, YW Diamond and others. Easily sailed by parent / child, grandparents, youths or couples, Herons are highly regarded as an ideal first boat for taking up dinghy sailing. Herons are stable and easy to sail but also reward skillful handling by those seeking a competitive sport in a one-design class. The jib is small enough for a 5 or 6 year old to manage, and the majority of boats are sailed by Parent / Child combinations. As the kids grow, they take their rightful position at the back of the boat!

Perhaps you are looking for a dinghy class to introduce your children to sailing. Sailing is one of the few sports where parents can participate directly as a team with their children and teach them the sporting values they want them to learn.

There is a huge variety of experience in the Qld Heron Fleet. Champions from other classes mix with first-season beginners; all sailing and learning from each other in a friendly atmosphere for all the family. You can't go past a Heron, whether you are looking for close tactical racing, or a pleasant afternoon on the water.  Competitive boats are available for hire (see below) or for sale from $800.00 upwards.  Go to the Contacts page if you would like to request further information.

If you would like to try sailing a Heron, visit the South Brisbane Sailing Club website.  SBSC (September - April) has club Herons that can be hired for racing by club members as well asproviding a fantastic learn-to-sail program right in the heart of the city. It is also the home of the largest Heron Fleet in Queensland with 15 to 20  boats regularly lining up for the start on Saturday afternoons.
