The Sailing Course for Beginners will run each Saturday morning for a period of six weeks and will cover topics including:
• Identify parts of the boat and their use.
• Tying useful knots, and their uses.
• The points of sailing (sailing circle).
• Rigging and de-rigging of dinghies.
• Hiking, balance and stability.
• Basic sailing forces in action.
• Handling the rudder, the sheets, and the sails.
• How to safely launch and retrieve dinghies.
• Dealing with capsizes in a safe manner.

The course is 100% hands on; you will be working with the clubs sailing dinghies (either herons or pacers) from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. A course manual, free use of the club boats and safety equipment is included in the cost of the course; as is your season membership and free use of the club Herons, Pacers, Lasers, Tasars and NS14 on Saturday afternoons until the end of the half sailing season. For further information about the course, or to register your interest please fill out form at the end of this page.
What you will need
You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness – you need to be able to swim reasonably well if the boat capsizes. An ability to swim at least 25m is recommended. You will also need to have sufficient strength to pull yourself out of the water with wet clothing on; this means you will need good upper body strength which matches your physique and weight.
What is provided
A course manual and the use of club boats and safety equipment (life jackets) is provided for your convenience.
