Working Bee - Critical Preparation for the 2025-2026 Summer Season

Event information

Registration for this event closes at Sat 02 Aug 2025 09:00.

We invite all members to come down and help prepare the club for the coming 2025-26 Summer Sailing season.

Join your fellow members to complete a number of minor tasks that go a long way to making the season run smoothly. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how our club runs and the equipment that is key to making it all to happen!

Following the working bee there will be a BBQ Lunch available for a fair price, with the second heat of the Winter Series in the afternoon. The club bar "Smithies" may open after the race depending on demand.

Truly a great winter's day out by the river!

Examples of the fun activities needed for the morning, to be lead by Troy McKay-Lowndes, our Rear Commodore;

  • Check all club sailing boats (Herons, Lasers, Pacers, Open Skiffs) and identify any missing items or work that needs to be undertaken before they can sail. This includes stays, sails, rudders, centreboards, bailing buckets, paddles, whisker poles, sheets, halyards and control lines, bungs and dollies and my personal favourite, security lines! When things fall out they don't have to disappear on the current or sink to the bottom. Will require rigging each boat. THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT RIGGING BOATS TO SAIL, BOAT CARE AS WELL AS SOME OF THE MORE OBSCURE NAMES OF PARTS & FITTINGS.
  • Check all power boats are carrying the required equipment; first aid & tool kits, boat hook, tow ropes, flags, paddles, ladders, bailing bucket, etc. List any outstanding items and don't forget my security lines! Although small floats can be an alternative. IF YOU INTEND TO BE A POWER BOAT VOLUNTEER THEN THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET FAMILIAR WITH THE SAFETY AND RACE MANAGEMENT EQUIPMENT EACH BOAT CARRIES BEFORE ATTENDING THE INDUCTION.
  • Check all equipment used by the Race Management Team and the LTS/BS classes. Flags, hand held radios, trolley bins, comfortable fold up chairs, etc.  IF YOU PREFER THE DRIER SIDE OF SAILING & ENJOYING GOOD COMPANY, THEN THIS IS THE TASK & VOLUNTEER ROLE FOR YOU! GREAT CHANCE TO LEARN ABOUT THE ARRAY OF FLAGS, SHELTERS, SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT WE USE (and occasionally forget to use :) ) TO MANAGE A CLUB RACE.
  • Check currency of PFDs and hard hats. Mark any that are out of date or supeseded for disposal. Review numbers & sizes for the clubs needs. A VITALLY IMPORTANT, YET THE EASIEST OF ALL TASKS, THAT ENSURES OUR SAILORS, ADULT & JUNIOR, HAVE ACCESS TO THE MANDATORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT TO SAIL SAFELY.

There's plenty to do, so hope to see you all there to lend a hand!
