The Race Committee or Race Management Team (RC/RMT) are responsible for the smooth running & safe conduct of Club races and Regattas.
The Priciple Race Officer (PRO) and Race Officer (RO), with assistance from the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Ramp and Boat Repair Officers and onshore & on water volunteers, ensure the smooth running of racing and the safety of sailors.
The Race Committee use a range of tools to manage racing and safety on the water;
Flags - These are used by the race committee and on the power boats to signal sailors. The raising or lowering of a flag is the priniciple signal to sailors.
Horn - A battery powered horn to provide sound signals to draw attention to the raising or lowering of flags. A backup hand pumped horn if the battery horn fails.
VHF Radios - to enable communication between the PRO RO and RC, the Safety Boats on water, the ramp officer as the club house.
Marks & Buoys - These are laid, moved and retrieved by the Safety boats under the direction of the PRO & RO. Includes the deployment of the Field of Play Buoys and the flag marks that denote the race course.
Tablets - There are 3 Galaxy tablets (Android & 1 with a sim card) that have a number of apps to assist in the starting and finishing of races.
StarterApp - An application on Android and IoS that runs the start sequences for one or more races.
HalSail App - A web based app for Android & IoS that passes finishing times to HalSail as boats are finished in real time.
Stopwatches, wrist watches, phones - backup timing devices for StarterApp or HalSail app to record starting & finishing times & time limits on forms.
HalSail - A web based race scoring system that tracks sailors results in a race and across a race series and displays race and series results on our web site.
Power Boats - Mark and buoy laying and retrieval, support for sailors in need on water, monitoring of other vessels in our sailing area.
Forms, forms and more forms - Below are links to the forms used by the RMT to accurately track and record the results of all boats and crews in every race and for sailors or the RC to lodge protests. While sailing embraces new technology, when it comes to ensuring the smooth management of racing and the safety of sailors, then the backup of our battery supplied electronic processes with pen & paper is vital.
Our club cannot function without volunteer support and while we always endeavour to get as many sailors as possible on the water, there are times where we need to recruit volunteers from the sailors. If a sailor is performing race duties on shore or on power boats then they are entitled to redress. RDG is used to indicate a sailor performing race duties and entitled to redress in accordance with our Sailing Instructions.
